The November 2018 GSHIP premium file has been uploaded into Connect Carolina and departments now have access to the GradStar GSHIP Administrator Premium Maintenance page to update allocations to Research Assistants/Teaching Assistants (RA/TAs). The total cost allocation must equal the monthly premium amount of $325.87.

We recently received notice that, due to a recent review of GSHIP insurance plan rates by the NC Department of Insurance, Blue Cross Blue Shield is making an adjustment to the GSHIP pricing for policy year 2018-2019. The monthly cost for the Graduate Health Insurance Program is now $325.87 per month instead of $332.91, bringing the annual coverage down to $3,910.44 instead of $3994.92, as stated in the May 2 memo.

Graduate students enrolled in the Graduate Student Health Insurance Program (GSHIP), frequently referred to as the RA/TA Health Insurance Plan, must submit an online waiver using their GSHIP insurance at www.bcbsnc.com/unc or they will be charged $1,311.50 each semester on their University account for the system wide Student Blue insurance plan available to all undergraduate and graduate students.

The UNC Chapel Hill GSHIP plan is a separate insurance plan from the system wide Student Blue insurance plan. Graduate students functioning as Research Assistants (RA), Teaching Assistants (TA), Fellows, or Trainees should continue to be enrolled in the GSHIP plan each semester through their academic program. RA/TA’s should not enroll themselves in the system wide Student Blue insurance plan available to all undergraduates and graduate students.

The March 2018 GSHIP premium file has been uploaded into Connect Carolina and departments now have access to the GradStar GSHIP Administrator Premium Maintenance page to update allocations to Research Assistants/Teaching Assistants (RA/TAs). There is one change to how departments can allocate GSHIP payments. There are only two allowable GSHIP account numbers: 515540 and 569220. If the student is receiving an award, for example a scholarship or fellowship, then account number 569220 should be used. Otherwise, enter 515540. Department business officers should then cost allocate among the projects’ chartfield string if there is more than one. The total cost allocation must equal the monthly premium amount of $324.43.”
