Tango Overview
The Tango Card program is one of several options the University offers to help researchers compensate study participants in a fiscally responsible and safe manner. This program was developed by cross-departmental collaboration between the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR), the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), and the Division of Finance and Operations (Finance).
Like the previous card program, users will access a web-based portal to manage study participant payments. Tango’s advantages are that it is available:
- for research funded by sponsored programs or non-sponsored funded projects; and
- in both electronic and physical gift cards (electronic cards are free, while modest fees apply for physical gift cards).
Tango Card Company
Please do not email the Tango Card company for access to the Tango Card system. The Tango Card company will redirect you back to the University. For assistance with Tango Card visit the Participant Payments page or email tango@unc.edu.
Tango Release and Resources
Tango officially launched on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, with a week-long series of trainings. After completing a required training session, campus users will be able to request access to Tango by completing the setup and access form.
The setup and access form must go through the appropriate approvals and be uploaded to the voucher system. After the voucher is paid, the Tango team will grant users access to the system. The University Tango Card resource website and reference materials are available on the Participant Payments page.
Training Requirement
OVCR, OSP, and Finance are jointly presenting several Tango Training Webinars to help users navigate the system. Attending one of these Tango Card trainings is required for access to use Tango Card and registration is also required to receive the Zoom webinar details and link. You must log into the training using your unique Zoom link to receive credit for attending the training.

Please register for ONE of the required training sessions:
- Session 1: August 4 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
- Session 2: August 11 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
- Session 3: August 18 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
- Session 4: August 25 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
