Accounting Services

Hua Shen, Accountant

Hua Shen joined the Financial Accounting team in Accounting Services on June 27 as a new accountant.

Hua earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Beijing Normal University in 1993 and received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2002. Hua is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She has worked at UNC-Chapel Hill for more than 15 years in Payment Card and Travel Services. Prior to joining our University, Hua worked several years in accounting with experience in the area of journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivables, budget, cost allocations, sales and use tax and month-end close.

Hua will be responsible for reviewing Data Collect Batch (DCB) journals, handling journal uploads, reconciling Peoplesoft GL and Subsystem and external data systems, creating new journal sources, producing various financial reports and assisting with month-end and year-end closing.

Nick Shives, Accountant

Nick Shives joined the Financial Accounting team in Accounting Services on June 27.

Nick earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011 and Master of Accounting from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill in June 2020. Last year, Nick obtained his CPA license in North Carolina. In Texas, Nick had six years of extensive working accounting and business operational experience at Stranded Oil, a start-up. After obtaining his masters of accounting, Nick joined PricewaterhouseCoopers as an assurance associate working on audit engagements for private clients in many different industries.

Nick will be responsible for establishing and modifying Institutional Trust Sources, reviewing general ledger journal entries and trust budget journals, analyzing financial data and reports, providing training and accounting guidance to campus departments and assisting with month‐end and year‐end closing activities.

Accounts Payable and Vendor Services

Jezreel Hunter, Vendor Team Supervisor

With a background in political science, psychology, and accounting, Jezreel began her career at UNC-Chapel Hill via University Temporary Services in Purchasing Services, before moving to Disbursement Services in 2014 and being hired permanently to Accounts Payable in 2017. She was promoted to vendor team supervisor on Feb. 21.

As the vendor team supervisor, Jezreel is responsible for overseeing and approving foreign vendor requests and foreign vendor tax settings, along with reviewing all of the outgoing foreign and domestic wires that Carolina generates. In addition, Jezreel processes Independent Contractor campus vouchers.

Summer Skyy, Domestic Vendor Coordinator

Summer began her Carolina career first as a temporary employee as the vendor support coordinator in 2020 before she was promoted to domestic vendor coordinator on Jan. 10.

Prior to her Carolina career, Summer graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and criminology from the University of Maryland in College Park, and she worked as a customer service coordinator for Chesapeake Bay Roasting Company of Crofton, Maryland.

As the domestic vendor coordinator for Accounts Payable, Summer serves as the primary contact for the initial supplier setup for UNC-Chapel Hill’s vendor management system, maintaining vendor profiles and assists with independent contractor processing. She reviews accuracy of data entered and documentation submitted to create or update the vendor profiles as well as the IC contracts submitted by all departments. She also investigates and verifies secure sensitive information provided between departments and current/future suppliers.

Henry Pitts, Vendor Coordinator Support Technician

Henry Pitts joined the Accounts Payable and Vendor Services team on Feb. 7.  Prior to that, Henry worked at Galloway Ridge in Fearrington Village.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from UNC-Chapel Hill where he minored in statistics and philosophy, politics and economics.

Henry works primarily with domestic vendors employed by Carolina to maintain both vendor information and relations. He communicates with both the vendors and University departments to ensure all information and payments are processed correctly and in a timely manner.

Payroll Services

Savannah Woods, Multistate Payroll Tax Accountant

On Aug. 29, Savannah Woods joined the Payroll Services team as their new multistate payroll tax accountant.

Savannah oversees all payroll tax compliance needs for states outside of North Carolina.  This includes matters such as filing returns and making tax payments, state tax accounts’ oversight and making PeopleSoft system updates associated with out-of-state payroll tax management.  She also works with departments and employees on questions related to out-of-state work and payroll tax topics.

Before joining Finance and Budget, Savannah served as a business analyst to support various accounting needs and reviews for Natuzzi Americas, Inc., and in her prior work history had managed state payroll taxes for a construction firm.

University Controller

Audra Slavin, Auxiliary Financial Director

Audra joined the University Controller’s team on Sept. 6 as the new auxiliary financial director after 20 years of service at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Audra earned an Associate of Science in finance and investments and a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Johnson and Wales University in 1991 before earning Master of Public Administration from North Carolina Central University in 2018.

She came to Carolina in November 2002, following a ten-year career in private industry, including financial planning, analysis and internal audit in the hotel and airline industries. Starting as an account manager for the biology department, she became assistant director for business services for Carolina Housing in 2005 before being promoted to senior finance administrator for Student Affairs in 2011. She was with Student Affairs for 17 years, becoming a subject matter expert responsible for the financial operations of 18 departments in the division and was promoted to senior finance director for Student Affairs in 2019.

As the auxiliary financial director, Audra leads campus-wide efforts to conduct analysis and project work related to auxiliary and other trust funds for the University, including analysis, projects, accounting and future reporting needs that will be developed over time. She works closely with the leadership of Finance and Budget, University-wide finance leads across the institution and other central units to assess needs and expand capabilities for budgeting, reporting and analytics. Her position reports to Manali Bettendorf, university controller, but has dotted-line reporting for leading special projects as needed under the direction of Steve Agostini, associate vice chancellor for Finance and Budget.
