To:     University Business Managers
From: Kevin Seitz, Interim Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration
Date:  October 11, 2013

Due to my recent assignment to the position of Interim Vice Chancellor for the Division of Finance and Administration, some interim assignments within the division are needed in order to manage day-to-day responsibilities. The two interim appointments detailed below are effective immediately.

Meredith Weiss will serve in an interim capacity as Associate Vice Chancellor for Energy, Environment, Health and Campus Safety.  Meredith is currently the Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Services and Administration and will assume the additional responsibilities of this vacant position until it is filled.  Meredith was appointed Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Services and Administration in 2012. She came to the post from the School of Law, where she served two years as Assistant Dean for Information Technology and six years as Associate Dean for Administration, Finance and Information Technology.  She received a Ph.D. in information science from the University’s School of Information and Library Science in 2010.

A search for the permanent Associate Vice Chancellor for Energy, Environment, Health and Campus Safety will occur after the new Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration is appointed.

I also have asked Brian Smith to serve as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for the Finance Division.   Brian is currently Director of Treasury and Risk Management Services, and began his University career in 2004 as the University’s Debt Manager.  In his current role, Brian oversees the University’s financing activities, investment of its operating cash and insurance programs; manages the University’s banking, rating agency and investor relationships; and oversees specialized financial analysis projects. Previously, Brian worked for 12 years at Wachovia Bank in a variety of corporate lending and risk management roles.  He received a B.A. in Economics from the University in 1991 and is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a Certified Treasury Professional.

I appreciate the willingness of Meredith and Brian to serve in this capacity for the interim period until a new Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration is named.  Other interim changes related to the Finance portion of the ConnectCarolina project are necessary and will be communicated as those decisions are finalized.

Thank you in advance for your support during this time of transition.
