To: Finance and Budget Staff, Campus Unit Finance Leads
From: Stephen J. Agostini, Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Budget
I am writing to let you know that Brian Smith has decided to conclude his service as Senior Assistant Vice Chancellor and Treasurer to accept a new opportunity at University of Michigan as Associate Vice President for Finance, effective July 15.  Brian’s last day at Carolina will be June 28.

Brian’s support as strategic adviser and treasury services lead in Finance and Operations has been critical during recent Finance and Operations leadership transitions. During Brian’s 15 years at Carolina, he has held positions of increasing responsibility, including Assistant Vice Chancellor of Finance and Accounting, Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance, Director of Treasury and Risk Management Services, Director of Treasury Operations and University Debt Manager. Brian was promoted to his current position in February 2015.

Brian’s leadership and his working relationships with campus financial leads has been a source of stability during times of change. Most recently, he spearheaded the Finance Council and was integral in Operational Excellence and budget process initiatives. Though I have worked with him for only six months, his insight and institutional knowledge has been critical to several ongoing initiatives.

We will continue to provide you with updates related to this transition. Please join me in thanking Brian for his years of leadership and dedication to Carolina. We wish him the very best.
