To: Department of Finance Staff
From: Jonathan Pruitt, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations

I’m happy to announce that Stephen “Steve” Agostini has been named the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s associate vice chancellor for finance and budget, starting Monday, Jan. 14. Steve comes to Carolina with a wealth of experience in federal and local government financial leadership, most recently having served as CFO and director of the Department of Management and Finance for the Arlington, Virginia, county government.

In his role as leader of the finance department, Steve will serve as a key strategic advisor to me on financial issues, and will provide institutional oversight of the University’s financial, budget and accounting operations. Steve will work in close collaboration with campus senior leaders such as UNC Health Care Administration, the UNC System Office, the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (OEVC&P), and the greater campus community, in strategic management of the University’s financial resources.

Prior to his work in Arlington County, Steve’s experience includes serving as CFO for three U.S. federal agencies: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Office of Personnel Management, and the Economics and Statistics Administration. He also brings to Carolina experience as a financial and budget official for a number of sizeable local governments, including the City of Philadelphia, Milwaukee County, the City of San Francisco and the City of Milwaukee.

Steve’s notable career in financial management includes developing and managing multi-billion-dollar annual operating budgets that reflect the priorities of national agency directors and mayors; overseeing the financial infrastructure design and implementation for a new federal agency; and managing the financial reporting and internal control and audit functions for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Office of Personnel Management.

Steve earned his master’s degree in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and his bachelor of arts in government at Harvard University.

I would like to thank the members of the search committee: Carly Perin, executive director of finance for the Finance and Operations Service Center of Excellence; Phyllis Petree, retired chief audit officer; Micah Malouf, associate university counsel; Scott Myers, director of Auxiliary Services; and Darrell Jeter, director of Emergency Management and Planning.

Please join me in welcoming Steve into his new role in Finance and Operations!
