UNC-Chapel Hill will observe a ten-day closure of the University during Winter Break 2021. During this time, Facilities Services will have limited staff resources on call. The following areas may be of interest to your department regarding service coverage during the break:

Housekeeping and Building Services: Staff will be available on an on-call basis to handle emergencies that should arise. Response times may be lengthened due to this status. The on-call service period will begin Thursday night, Dec. 23, at 10 p.m. and end Monday morning, Jan. 3.

Energy Management: The University will implement a Winter Holiday Energy Saving Initiative to reduce energy consumption and utility costs by lowering temperatures in unoccupied buildings. It is asked that you turn off all lights and unnecessary equipment and close all windows and fume hood sashes before leaving campus. The initiative will begin Thursday night, Dec. 23, at 10 p.m. and end Sunday night, Jan. 2, at 10 p.m.

Exceptions to the Energy Saving Initiative: Research labs, animal facilities and designated health care facilities that are critical to the University’s mission are not included in this energy saving initiative. All previous exemptions will remain in effect, you do not need to submit another exemption request.

If you have a special need or event during the break that will require an exemption from the 2021 Winter Holiday Energy Saving Initiative, please submit an Exemption Request by 5 p.m. Dec. 10.

Please do not submit exemption requests via the Facilities Services Service Request portal or directly to Facilities Services personnel. Building occupants will be notified of approved exemptions by 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13.

For questions or concerns, contact Energy Management at save-energy@unc.edu.

Thank you for supporting this important initiative.
