The University has two types of letters on file for tax purposes:

Certification of Status

This letter, from the Internal Revenue Service, certifies that The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a tax-exempt entity under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code in a determination letter issued June 1929 and may be used to establish this fact when purchasing or requesting services for the University.

Purchasing Items Without Tax

The UNC-Chapel Hill Tax Exemption Letter to a Business Partner provides the sales tax and use exemption number for qualifying purchases.  The letter provides exemption from sales tax when items are purchased with a valid UNC-Chapel Hill purchase order bearing the exemption number and the description of goods to be purchased, or the goods purchased or paid for with a University-issued check, electronic funds transfer, procurement card, or credit account of the State agency.
