Re: Update: Tax Withholding Initiative for University Employees Working Outside the State of North Carolina
I’m writing to provide you with an update on our multi-state tax withholding/reporting initiative. As you may remember, last fall you received a communication requesting that you provide us with the names of employees within your unit who were residing and working outside of North Carolina. As we shared in a follow up communication in January, our plan was to use that information to determine the states that we needed to register in as an employer. While the registration process has taken much longer than we anticipated, it is our hope to begin withholding payroll tax for these states on January 1, 2017. However, we thought it would be prudent to refresh the information we currently have concerning employees residing and working outside of North Carolina.
To help us update the information we have on file, we are again asking you to provide the data requested on this form for the employees within your unit that you anticipate will be residing and working outside of North Carolina for calendar year 2017. You will note that this includes the PID, name, department number, street address, city, state, zip code and an estimate of the number of months that you anticipate they will be residing and living outside of North Carolina in 2017. Also, please identify the best way to contact the individual.
If they have not already done so, please have the employee(s) who both reside and work outside of North Carolina complete the form, The University of North Carolina Notice of Employee Both Residing and Working Outside of North Carolina. The form can also be found as part of the tax information and materials on the Payroll Services landing page, and should be returned to David Lucus, Payroll Taxation Manager, by close of business, Monday, October 17.
**If there are no individuals within your unit currently living and working in states other than North Carolina, complete the top section of the chart and mark “0” for the Number of Individuals to report.**
If there have been no changes to the information submitted in September 2015, please submit the form with a note indicating “No changes since 2015.”
We appreciate your assistance and will keep you updated on this initiative’s progress. If you have any questions, please contact me at 919-843-0383 or dwlucus@email.unc.edu.
