Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Budget

Stephen “Steve” Agostini became the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s associate vice chancellor for finance and budget Jan. 14, 2019.
In his role as leader of the finance department, Agostini serves as a key strategic advisor to division leadership on financial issues and provides institutional oversight of the University’s financial, budget and accounting operations. Agostini works in close collaboration with campus senior leaders such as UNC Health Care Administration, the UNC System Office, the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost (OEVC&P), and the greater campus community, in strategic management of the University’s financial resources.
Before coming to Carolina, Agostini most recently served as CFO and director of the Department of Management and Finance for the Arlington, Virginia, county government. His experience also includes serving as CFO for three U.S. federal agencies: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Office of Personnel Management, and the Economics and Statistics Administration. He also served as a financial and budget official for a number of sizeable local governments, including the City of Philadelphia, Milwaukee County, the City of San Francisco and the City of Milwaukee.
Agostini’s career in financial management includes developing and managing multi-billion-dollar annual operating budgets that reflect the priorities of national agency directors and mayors; overseeing the financial infrastructure design and implementation for a new federal agency; and managing the financial reporting and internal control and audit functions for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Office of Personnel Management.
Agostini earned his master’s degree in public policy from the University of California, Berkeley, and his bachelor of arts in government at Harvard University.
