From: Matt Fajack, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration

Date: February 24, 2015

I’m happy to announce that Brian Smith has been promoted to Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and Accounting for the Division of Finance and Administration, effective February 2.

Brian has moved up through the F&A organization in various critical roles. He has most recently served as Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and Accounting while maintaining his regular duties as Director of Treasury and Risk Management. During his time with F&A, he has overseen the Finance Division’s successful implementation of the ConnectCarolina conversion, restructuring the Finance functional project team to support this major effort. Brian also spent nine months as Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance while this project was under way. He has been Director of Treasury and Risk Management Services since 2007, and started with the University in 2004 as University Debt Manager. He spent 12 years with Wachovia Bank, including Vice President and Senior Commercial Credit Products Manager.

As the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Brian will oversee the daily accounting and financial management enterprise for the University, in close coordination with the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and the financial leaders of the many schools and divisions. He will work in close partnership with the Vice Chancellor for F&A and will report to Senior Associate Vice Chancellor Meredith Weiss. Areas of oversight include procurement services, student accounts and University receivables, treasury, payroll, and accounting services.

I want to thank the search committee, which included Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Meredith Weiss, Associate Vice Chancellor and Deputy General Counsel Pat Crawford, Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Planning (College of Arts and Sciences) Tammy McHale, Senior Associate Athletic Director Martina Ballen, and former Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources Matt Brody for their help leading this successful search.  Please join me in congratulating Brian on his new role.
