TO: University Faculty and Staff
FROM: Anna Wu, Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Services

UNC-Chapel Hill will observe a formal one-week closure of the University during Winter Break 2016. During this time, UNC-Chapel Hill Facilities Services will have limited staff resources on call. The following areas may be of interest to your department regarding service coverage during the break:

Housekeeping and Building Services: Staff will be available on an on-call basis to handle emergencies that should arise. Response times will be lengthened due to this status. The on-call status will begin Friday night, December 23, at 10 p.m., and end Tuesday morning, January 2.

Energy Management: The University will implement a Winter Holiday 2016 Energy Saving Initiative to reduce energy consumption by lowering temperatures in buildings and turning off lights and unnecessary equipment. It is asked that you turn off all lights, space heaters, close all windows and fume hood sashes. The Initiative will begin Friday night, December 23, at 10:00 p.m., and end Sunday night, January 1.

Exceptions to the Energy Saving Initiative: Research labs, animal facilities and designated health care facilities that are critical to the University’s mission are not included in this energy saving initiative.  However, even in these facilities there will only be on-call Housekeeping and Building Services staff.

If you have a special need or event that requires exemption from the Winter Holiday 2016 Energy Saving Initiative, or if your need or event requires additional Housekeeping and/or Building Services staff, please submit an Exception Request Form by 5 p.m. on November 30.

Please do not send these requests to the Facilities Services Request portal or directly to Facilities Services personnel. Building occupants will be notified of the approved exemptions by 5 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2016.

If you have any questions or concerns, email save_energy@unc.edu.

Thank you for supporting this important initiative.
