Our Next Event -- Summer Book ClubRegister now to participate in our next event – a Book Club to study and discuss diversity and culture. The book club will study “Covering : The Hidden Assault on our Civil Rights” which was selected as summer reading* for the University’s incoming students. Kenji Yoshino is the Guido Calabresi Professor of Law at Yale University. In “Covering,” published in 2006, he uses his identity as Japanese-American and gay to illustrate sociologist Erving Goffman’s notion of “covering” – downplaying stigmatizing identities in order to assimilate to the cultural mainstream. Yoshino challenges ideas about minority rights and the sometimes-damaging effects of social integration.The book club will study “Covering : The Hidden Assault on our Civil Rights” which was selected as summer reading* for the University’s incoming students. *The Carolina Summer Reading Program is designed to provide a common experience for incoming students, to enhance participation in the intellectual life of the campus through stimulating discussion and critical thinking around a current topic, and to encourage a sense of community between students, faculty and staff.
